Summer Fruit Picking

Dai and I have talked about going fruit picking for the past couple summers, but never made it until this past weekend. We weren't really sure what kinds of fruit we wanted to pick, though there are a few areas around the Bay Area that are known for allowing you to pick your own fruit. We called around and it seemed that cherries didn't do so hot this year due to the drought, so we were left with peaches and strawberries. So bright and (somewhat) early on Saturday morning, we hopped in the car and drove about an hour or so east towards the country.
We first stopped at a place that mostly specialized in peaches to pick. It was great because we were even able to bring Marly along! I think he really liked it, even though it was hotter out than he prefers. He did not like the peaches, which was actually pretty surprising to me! That dog loves fruits and veggies.
Wandering through the rows and rows of peaches was fun, and we quickly learned what to look or feel for when selecting a peach. We tried a few of the peaches to try to get the hang of it and most of them were delicious. Like really the best peaches I've ever had.

We later stopped at a little strawberry patch just down the road to pick a few for ourselves. We didn't spend too long there since many of the strawberries had already been picked over, and because we were just over the heat! Marly was a trooper, but being black in the heat doesn't work so well in his favor. Still, we did get some strawberries to take home (exactly $1's worth haha) and they were pretty great. After we had our fill of fruit for the day, we stopped at a local tamale restaurant for some lunch and then headed home with the AC on full blast to take an afternoon nap before going out to the movies that evening. Because obviously, every awesome Saturday needs a nap involved.

Have you ever been fruit picking? Any tips you can share for our next time?

Looks like fun!! It's been a long while since I've gone strawberry picking...hoping to take William next year since he'll be about a year old! I've never picked peaches or anything like that...maybe this fall I'll try apple picking since my mom and I get serious about making homemade applesauce for canning. And it's super awesome that Marley got to join in the fun!

AWWWWWW. Poor Marley! He's probably like ugh, I'm black people, my fur is on fire! Haha
Looks like you had a great time....and I've picked fruit off the tree back when my grandparents had their old house. It IS SO MUCH better off the tree. Once we have a house someday, indefinitely want to plant some!

This sounds so fun! I wanted to go apple picking last fall, but since the apple harvest wasn't so great, there weren't many orchards allowing it. Maybe this year.

So jealous of your perfect California climate! It's been raining almost non-stop here the whole month and the only things we are constantly picking is lettuce, spinach, kale, arugula and other salad greens. Uh, I'm dreaming of a peach orchard!

Up until this year, I hadn't even gone apple picking! Fruit picking sounds much more up my alley. Ahh the wonders of living in a non-frigid climate. Drooling over those peaches!

Thanks Areeba! Fruit picking is definitely fun and you should try it if you have any spots near you! :)

Awww that would be so fun and cute! I can picture little William picking strawberries as a wobbly one-year-old :) I picked apples once and they were kind of bitter and small, but maybe it was too early in the season. You should try it and hopefully you'll have better luck! It would be great to make applesauce with them! Marly was definitely happy to be included, even if he was hot :)

Haha I know! I felt bad, but I know he is much happier to put up with the heat for a while than to be left behind at home. Fruit really is so much better when picked from the tree! Growing up, my grandma had apricot and plum trees and they were so delicious. Still haven't had fruit quite like it since!

I went apple picking a couple years ago, but the apples weren't very good. Small and bitter! But maybe it was the wrong time in the season/wrong place/bad luck! Hopefully you have better luck this year :)

Bummer... At least you have good things for a salad! Some fruit would be nice though, I'm sure :) Hopefully soon!

Yeah I would say that fruit picking is much better than apple picking! Better variety, you know? How many apples can you really eat? haha. Hopefully you can pick some other fruit sometime!

This seriously seems like such a lovely day, especially with the nap later ;) I usually go apple picking in the fall but always forget about all the other fruit that can be picked during summer months! I also want to add that your puppy is adorable.
