I'm off to...

Yep, you read that correctly! This California girl is headed out on her first international adventure! In April, Dai and I will be spending two whole weeks in this lovely place, visiting his family & friends and exploring all that we can. I really cannot believe this is actually happening, let alone just a couple months from now! This trip is something Dai and I have talked about since we started dating, a "someday if we decide we actually really like each other and can actually afford it" kind of trip. For Dai to be able share his culture (he was born there & grew up here) with me one day has always been important to us (though don't be mistaken, we get plenty of talk about all things Japanese in on the regular ;) ). Well, here we are, two and a half years into our relationship and we are going to Japan. WE ARE GOING TO JAPANI just had to say that once more because I am half expecting this to all be some dream, but nope, it is actually happening!

Even though Dai and I have been in a loving and committed relationship for quite a while now, I still saw Japan as a distant possibility, in a realm where I have the extra money for something like that. And then this opportunity in April came up and the timing seemed perfect. I was still unsure if I would be going, even though Dai would be going regardless of my decision since both of his siblings were also going to be there to visit their parents. I went back and forth, until one day I was driving on the freeway to work and I thought to myself, Screw it, I'm going to Japan. Next thing I knew, I was talking to teachers and got the blessing from the family I nanny for, and BOOM TICKETS WERE BOOKED.

I know that this excursion is going to make quite the dent in my bank account, but I started to realize one important thing: Later on in my life, when I am an old woman, I will look back on this trip and remember the amazing time I had, the people I met, the things I saw & ate. Not how I had to skimp on Starbucks runs, eating out, or Target splurges to make it all happen.

So, again I say, screw it, I'm going to Japan.
